CW cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) with a semiconductor optical amplifier as intensity modulator

چکیده
We summarized both advantages and disadvantages of different light modulators used in cw-CRDS experiments. For the first time, we introduce the use of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as light modulator in cw-CRDS. A direct comparison of the sensitivity realized on the same instrument using an SOA as modulator with use of an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) has been made. It is found that the SOA has larger extinction ratio ( 81 dB) than the AOM. For our instrument, with single-shot initial signal-tonoise ratio of 1400:1, these two modulators are found giving equivalent sensitivity. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Noise caused by a finite extinction ratio of the light modulator in CW cavity ring-down spectroscopy
A model is presented for the effect of a finite extinction ratio of the light modulator used in continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CW-CRDS) experiments. We present a simple analytical expression for the minimum isolation required to prevent a significant increase in the fluctuations of the cavity decay rate, which determine the sensitivity of the method. We also present systematic m...
متن کاملBoron Nitride Sputter Erosion Measurements by Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy
Sputter erosion is a critically important process in many electric propulsion (EP) devices from the point of view of both lifetime assessment and contamination effects. In many Hall thrusters erosion of boron nitride (BN) is of primary interest. In this contribution we introduce the use of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) as a diagnostic for measurement of sputtered BN. The measurement appr...
متن کاملContinuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy measurements of velocity distribution functions of argon ions in a helicon plasma.
We report continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy (CW-CRDS) measurements of ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs) in low pressure argon helicon plasma (magnetic field strength of 600 G, T(e) ≈ 4 eV and n ≈ 5 × 10(11) cm(-3)). Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) is routinely used to measure VDFs of argon ions, argon neutrals, helium neutrals, and xenon ions in helicon sources. Here, we d...
متن کاملEvanescent Wave Cavity Ring-down Spectroscopy: a Future Technology for Process Sensing
Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) is described. The total internal reflection (TIR)-ring and monolithic folded cavity designs are briefly discussed. The performance of EW-CRDS for trace water vapor detection is evaluated by accounting for surface chemical and physical properties as well as intrinsic resonator properties. INTRODUCTION Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) us...
متن کاملContinuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy for velocity distribution measurements in plasma.
We report the development of a continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopic (CW-CRDS) diagnostic for real-time, in situ measurement of velocity distribution functions of ions and neutral atoms in plasma. This apparatus is less complex than conventional CW-CRDS systems. We provide a detailed description of the CW-CRDS apparatus as well as measurements of argon ions and neutrals in a high-densi...
